Tian-Shan Highway Expedition 2027

OVERVIEW

This journey takes you on a grand loop through the heart of the Tien Shan mountains, connecting the country’s most breathtaking alpine lakes and historical landmarks. Starting from Bishkek, you will travel through the ancient Burana Tower to the nomadic shores of Song-Kul Lake. The adventure continues south to the medieval Tash-Rabat Caravanserai, a stone fortress hidden in a mountain canyon, before reaching the jagged turquoise waters of Kol-Suu Lake near the Chinese border.

The final leg of the trip transitions from Eki-Naryn Gorge and the rugged Tosor Pass toward the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake. You will explore dramatic red rock formations in Skazka Canyon and Jeti-Oguz, hike to the waterfalls of Barskoon, and relax in the hot springs of Altyn-Arashan. The tour concludes with a visit to ancient petroglyphs in Cholpon-Ata before returning to the capital.

This expedition is ideal for adventurous travelers and photography enthusiasts who are eager to trade modern luxuries for raw natural beauty and deep cultural immersion. It is perfectly suited for those who enjoy off-road journeys, are physically fit enough for moderate day hikes at high altitudes, and are comfortable with the rustic realities of nomadic life, such as sharing traditional yurts and having limited access to electricity or internet.

The Tien Shan Highway, a new tour product in the majestic Tian Shan mountains, enhances this incredible journey, offering improved access to these stunning landscapes and cultural sites. Whether you are a history buff interested in Silk Road heritage or a nature lover seeking the solitude of “off-the-beaten-path” glacial lakes and rugged mountain passes, this trip provides a rare opportunity to disconnect from the world and experience the authentic, timeless rhythm of the Kyrgyz highlands.
