Here is an overview and an expanded, detailed breakdown of your 7-day adventure.
Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights
Total Distance: Approximately 93 km
Difficulty: Challenging (Requires good physical fitness and acclimatization)
Maximum Altitude: 3,906 m (Ala-Kul North Pass)
Highlights: * Boz-Uchuk Lakes: Pristine, alpine twin lakes tucked away from the main tourist crowds.
Altyn Arashan: A world-famous valley known for its pine forests and healing geothermal hot springs.
Ala-Kul Lake: A high-altitude, turquoise glacial lake that changes color depending on the light.
Teleti Pass: A demanding crossing that rewards you with views of the nomadic Kok-Jaik pastures.
Jeti-Ögüz: The legendary “Seven Bulls” and “Broken Heart” red sandstone rock formations.
Your journey starts with a 1-hour drive from Karakol into the Turgen Gorge, a lush valley filled with spruce trees. The trek begins with a steady climb toward the Boz-Uchuk Ashuu Pass (3,460 m). As you gain altitude, the trees thin out, replaced by alpine meadows. After conquering the pass, you’ll descend into a hidden basin where the Boz-Uchuk Lakes sit.
Pro Tip: These lakes are perfect for sunset photography. The reflection of the surrounding peaks on the still water is world-class.
Trekking: 12 km | 6–7 hours
Max Alt: 3,460 m
Today is all about the vistas. Instead of staying in the valley, you will traverse scenic ridges. To your side, the Ak-Suu glacier wall dominates the horizon—a massive vertical face of ice and rock. This section of the trail is relatively high and exposed, offering a true sense of the scale of the Tian Shan mountains.
Pro Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for eagles and marmots along the ridges.
Trekking: 13 km | 5–6 hours
Experience: High-altitude ridge walking with panoramic glacial views.
You will tackle the Ortok Pass (3,650 m) today. The climb is steep but the descent is the real treat. You’ll drop down into the Altyn Arashan (Golden Spa) valley. This is arguably the most beautiful valley in Kyrgyzstan, famous for its towering Tien Shan firs and the Palatka Peak (The Tent) looming in the distance.
The Reward: After three days of trekking, you can soak your tired muscles in the natural hot springs located in the village.
Trekking: 14 km | 5–6 hours
Max Alt: 3,650 m
Prepare for the most strenuous day of the trip. You will leave the valley and head up toward the Ala-Kul North Pass (3,906 m). The ascent is a steep scramble over scree (loose rock), but reaching the top provides a “top of the world” feeling. Below you lies Ala-Kul, a stunning turquoise lake cradled by glaciers. You will descend to a campsite right on the lakeshore.
Warning: It gets very cold and windy at the lake at night; ensure your gear is rated for freezing temperatures.
Trekking: 15 km | 7–8 hours
Max Alt: 3,906 m
Wake up to the sun hitting the lake. Before leaving, you have the option to hike toward the nearby glacier to see where the lake gets its icy water. The trek then heads west, involving a very steep descent into the Karakol Valley. Your knees will feel this one! Once you hit the valley floor, the terrain levels out into a beautiful forested trail. You’ll cross a wooden bridge and set up camp in the wide, grassy valley.
Altitude Change: A massive 1,100 m descent followed by a gentle 200 m climb to camp.
Trekking: 11 km | 4–5 hours
Today you enter the Teleti Valley, heading toward the Teleti Pass (3,792 m). This pass is narrower and feels more rugged than the others. The ascent is steady, and once over the top, you descend into the Kok-Jaik area. This is classic Kyrgyz “jailoo” (high summer pasture) territory, where you’ll likely see grazing horses and nomadic shepherd camps.
Trekking: 15 km | 6–7 hours
Max Alt: 3,792 m
Your final day is a gentle, scenic descent. You’ll walk through the Valley of Flowers, which is carpeted in wildflowers during the early summer. As you approach the end of the trek, the landscape changes dramatically from gray granite to vibrant red sandstone. You’ll finish at the Seven Bulls and Broken Heart rock formations.
Final Act: Enjoy a celebratory lunch in a yurt or local cafe before your transfer back to Karakol.
Trekking: 13 km | 4–5 hours
