To the northwest of Kyrgyzstan the Talas River winds through the lush green landscapes of the Talas Valley before disappearing into the thirsty steppe. On either side rise the spectacular Kyrgyz and Talas Ala-Too mountain Ranges, riddled with intriguing canyons and crevices.
Talas is known as the birthplace of the legendary hero Manas. Visit his many memorials, including the ornate brick mausoleum near the town to Talas. Several other well known Kyrgyz figures have originated in this region, including writer Chyngyz Aytmatov.
Talas region has been inhabited since ancient times. At the headwaters of the river lie burial grounds and other remnants of civilization from 1000 AD. In many places ancient petroglyphs can be seen etched in stones, most depicting animals.
South of the city is the rugged valley Besh-Tash— in Kyrgyz, «Five Stones.» Trek where bizarre rock formations shelter shy snow leopards and golden eagles soar over the glittering Besh-Tash river.
